Congratulations to Mike and his collaborators for the impressive amount of
work done to create a very useful set of charts.See
http://joevp.20m.com/charts/about.html
I have only had a quick look at the site, but one chart has been sctuinized
very closely, and my comments are below.
V384 Sco (Provisional chart).
This is an old nova, from 1893. Seen on only 3 plates between 1893 April 30
and May 18 (H.H. Swope, HB902 (1936)5).
Range according to H.W. Duerbeck (1987) is 12.3 (9.3)- 18.5j, who identifies
the post nova on a UK Schmidt plate.
A curious fact about this star is that it actually lies within Sagittarius!
About 39' from the Sco-Sgr border. It must have been named before the
constellation boundaries had been officially agreed, in the 1930s.
Notes on Simonsen chart. The file name for the chart is
Sco_V384_C_northup.gif, however the title on the actual chart is *V348 Sco*.
A small typo.
The sky region is a crowded milky way field, and there are other variables
in the vicinity, but not shown. If the positions of other variables are
known precisely it may be better to show them, to avoid false alarms. I
realize that it may not always be possible to identify other (usually faint)
variables due to poor positions or lack of finder charts. In the case of
V384 Sco, there are two nearby variables, V557 Sgr and V563 Sgr, which can
be identified using a Russian finder chart from the 1960s.
The positions are :
V557 Sgr (CWA type) : (2000) 18h01m40.12s -35°39'14.7" (USNO-A2.0)
V563 Sgr (I) : 18 02 15.63 -35 43 47.9
V557 Sgr is only 45" ENE of the target star, and appears to be identical
with the 129 comparison star. Another reason to scrutinize other
variables - to avoid including such stars in the sequence.. Not always easy
to do.
The sequence for V384 Sco is _not_ by Arne Henden; it was set up by Bruce
Sumner based on UCAC1 data.
