Indeed, the AAVSO reporting format and software contributes to this.
Everything is reported in capitol letters, and they require a space between
SN and 2002. The observer must manually change this when converting to VSNET
format.
I have been guilty of forgetting to do this myself.
The same problem exists for stars like Eta Gem. VSNET requests GEMeta, AAVSO
reports GEMETA when converting to VSNET format.
