[vsnet-chat 5054] Re: (fwd) OGLE-II variables

Gerry Good asked about the new OGLE variables.
My feeling on this issue is that the OGLE database already
has several hundred high precision observations of every
new variable. Rather than going out and observing it
Yet Again with your telescope, I think the more fruitful
exercise is to use their database and find periods/classification
for the variables they have discovered. Then, go back on
those that are uncertain and acquire new data. You might
do a first cut on magnitude and eliminate those stars that
are too faint for your system.
The Bulge fields were chosen for their high star
densities, as the more stars, the more likely a MACHO event
will occur. Most of the new variables will be faint
since the number of stars increases as you go fainter.
Crowded field photometry is a real art, as aperture
photometry will always include faint companions to the
variable and its comparison stars. So you will need to
look carefully at the DSS and pick only those new
variables that will be easy to do with your particular setup.
