Now that people like Sandage, Arp and Hoyle are no longer around, it is
hard to think of professional community examples of personality and dogma
on a particular topic overriding evidence and data, but when professionals
make out that such things don't happen in their own community, it gets on
my tits.

Actually, I always thought Arp bore his "expulsion" and the castigation of
his peers quite gracefully, considering the ofttimes personal and career
destroying way in which it was expressed towards him, whilst on the other
hand when I first learnt that the occasionally forthright and blunt Sir
Fred was actually a Yorkshireman, I wasn't entirely surprised ;)
