It is definitely GSC 3170-877 (GSCmag = 10.96, USNO-A2.0 rmag = 11.6,
bmag = 12.3).  This "star" is actually triplet (within 5-6"), so the
change of the sky condition can affect the visibility of them.  The
2MASS catalog lists them separately as a rather dim IR source, so they
are unlikely to be red variables.

Toni, you should make comparison with some archived image, such as the
digitized sky survey.  It is accessible from Web, for example, 
http://archive.stsci.edu/dss .
