A CCD image of the MisV0380 field has been kindly provided by Fred Velthuis
of New Zealand, taken at almost exactly 14h UT 19/06/01. It clearly shows
MisV0380 as a bright object. I estimate from the image that the magnitude,
by eye, is around unfiltered ccd 12.1, using adjacent UCAC1 star mags as
comparators.
As it would be a bit of a coincidence for a star to be found in outburst
the first time it was looked for, and as Mike Simonsen and Rod Stubbings
estimated there to be no star at the position to a limiting visual
magnitude of 14.2 on June 18.2 and June 18.5 respectively, which in tandem
with the bright ccd images suggests this star is very red, the obvious
conclusion is that this star is an LPV.
Fred Velthuis himself notes that the corresponding probable candidate on
red DSS survey plates is very faint in comparison, so resorting to Baron
von Occam's sharp implement, MisV0380 is probably a fairly large amplitude
Mira, as was earlier suggested by Taichi Kato based on a possible cross
identification with an object in the MSX5C.
