[vsnet-chat 4521] newvar.cat TDF

Taichi Kato maintains and regularly updates a file of stars recently
suspected of variability by various individuals and groups.

http://ftp.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/pub/vsnet/others/newvar.cat

It is difficult nowadays to keep up with the number of such as yet
non-official stars.

Sometimes there are enough objects in a particular list to warrant
attention, but there are many instances where there are just a handful of
objects relating to one particular observer. In other instances the survey
may be just concentrated on a very small region of sky, and not normally
considered because of that.

Taichi Kato's newvar.cat file is a very useful way for the rest of us to
keep up with these objects. It numbers nearly 8,000 objects at present
that are either noted as variable by an observer or group or thought to be
potentially variable, with the latter including objects such as LS and
Halpha emission stars.

The following is a simple TDF for enabling the plotting of these objects in
the Guide 7 package.

Just download the above file into your Guide directory and then cut and
paste the following code that exists between the --------------- lines to
an editor. ! characters should then be removed, they are only being used
here as line start and end markers so that any wrapped lines (wrapped by
the email reader) can be corrected. Then save the file to your Guide
directory as newvar.tdf. Objects are plotted for fields of ten degrees or
less.

The symbol is a labelled plus sign, coded blue as is appropriate for
Ooruri-san ^_~

Due to the many sources and catalogues included in this datafile there are
many naming conventions and formats, and the names and data in newvar.cat
have therefore to be kept in a freeform nature, thus the labelling of these
objects by the TDF is not entirely sensible, nor can goto tdf work easily
with them, however sufficient detail should be found for every label to
enable identification.

newvar.cat represents a data source of many suspected and new but
unclassified variables that it is difficult or impossible to gain
information on in any other way. Anyone finding an object that appears to
be variable that is also apparently uncatalogued can now check if indeed it
is truly unknown.
