[vsnet-chat 4485] updated electronic version of GCVS

A copy of the updated version of the GCVS is available on line here:

http://ftp.sai.msu.su/pub/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs/iii/III.ZIP

Further if you extract the iii.dat from this file, then you can use the
following TDF to view the data in the planetarium software Guide 7, as long
as you copy iii.dat into your Guide directory. Objects are plotted as
labelled stars, the labels include the constellation name.

Note that you should cut and paste the following text that lies between
rows of -------------. The ! characters at start and end of each line
should be removed in a text editor, and the file saved to your Guide
directory as something sensible like GCVS.TDF. Use GOTO TDF to find a
variable, but note variables such as V402 And need to be referred to as
V0402 And... ...this is internal to iii.dat so cannot be avoided.

The ! characters are used as an indication of line start and line end in
case of lines being truncated on email transmission. Use the text editor
to make sure all lines start with a ! and end with a !, and then globally
remove the ! characters, before saving the file.

If you leave the default variables setting on in Guide you may well notice
that some positions have improved. This electronic version of the GCVS has
namelists 67-75 fully integrated, which therefore includes the GCVS
recognised Hipparcos variables which namelist 74 consisted of.

Cheers

John
