A Minor Planet Electronic Circular was issued today that may be of interest
to wide-field sky-patrol observers. The asteroid now designated 2001 EC passed
close to Earth in late February, reaching mag. 11 and moving in excess of 60
degrees per day. The object was not observed until March 3, when it was found
by LINEAR.
Because it was rather bright, if there are wide-field photos/images taken
of the region they could be useful for improving the orbit. The inital
observations, orbit, and ephemeris are extracted below from MPEC 2001-E17.
The object passed across the northern galactic plane, so folks taking pictures
in that area may have recorded it between Feb 26 and Mar 1 UT. A more detailed
ephemeris can be obtained from the MPC's ephemeris service site:
