Yes Albert is a New Zealander, and he was observing U Pav when he found
the first Comet Jones (1946VI). This time it was T Aps.
Although Albert is well known to southerners as a prolific variable star
observer, I know nothing about Utsunomiya. Could our Japanese readers
provide some information please?
As for this comet, Michael Mattiazzo's independent discovery was a few
hours too late to get credited. Bill Bradfield reckons that he examined
Aps & vicinity the night before the comet entered the field. He tells me
he's going to take up variable star observing... ;-)
I'm also embarrassed to admit that I was looking right at this comet
but with 7x50 binoculars - the day before the IAUC was issued. No doubt
other hard luck stories will emerge!
Another recent comet discovery while observing variables is described at
http://vsnet.assa.org.au/sig/comets/tilbrook1.asp - which will now need
updating to reflect the latest events.
