Mike, I wonder if you refer to me directly there, if so, I'd be glad if you
could define 'griping'.
In any case, for me the attachments issue is a matter of having to
deal daily with a heavy email load (not uncommon in the astronomical
community), and thus not liking having to burn any time discarding
attachments which really could be better placed somwhere like
vsnet-sequence. Vsnet-chat is, or was, an email list for general discussion.
Another example would be a colleague I have who spends a lot of time
in a developing country, where they don't have very good telecommunications,
and his institute there pays a high price for its traffic. You would be
astute in thinking that such people as he suffer very slow download speeds.
So for many reasons, it is obviously better to send charts in attachments to
vsnet-sequence or whereever.
As for the problems involved with people unsubscribing from the
various vsnet lists due to frustration: if such people unsubscribed from
those lists because the nature of the traffic was out of context, what would
one expect for vsnet-chat if it should become proxy vsnet-sequence, vsnet-ad
nausea, et cetera cetera?
I do agree that posting good sequences is commendable, and I also
agree that yet another vsnet list is not necessary.

        Regards

        Paul Warhurst
