[vsnet-chat 3662] HD 95687 - It deserves GCVS status.

Dear friends:
                       Another very bright and interesting variable. It's very strange that this star hasn't been noted as variable before.
                      I'm refering to HD 95687 in Carina. It's one of the new Tycho variables announced by Woitas (IBVS 4444, 1997) The list presented there shows a very strange 2.91 day period for a supergiant M2Iab red variable (not surprisingly, since most of the periods found with Hipparcos & Tycho are like that).
                      This is another very red star (B-V= 2.1). And its variability could have been found from ground measurements long ago:
We can find this values:
                                         V= 7.38, B-V= 2.06 ( Humphreys, Strecker and Ney, 1972)
                                         V= 7.35, B-V= 2.12 ( Humphreys, 1978)
                                         V= 7.19, B-V= 2.06 (Tycho Catalogue,ESA 1997)
                                         V= 6.83 (Kaltcheva and Georgiev, 1993)
                                         V= 7.21, B-V= 2.07 (SIMBAD database)

HD 95687 is GSC 8958-02448 and its position is:  11h 01m 35.76s  -6102' 55.8" (2000.0)

When I first observed the star I only knew of the Tycho data and of the "74" value plotted in the RASNZ chart (452) for AG Carinae. And I estimated it at 6.9. Since february HD 95687 has been fading constantly (and slowly) up to 7.3 in august, so it's obvious that it's a slow variable as most of red stars.

I ask for a Harvard designation to AAVSO HQ. I attach a chart for this new variable and I'll send the observations in a separate report.

Best regards,
Sebastian Otero (OSE),
