PT And: reccurent nova in M31?
Accordin to recent IBVS 4909, PT And (UGSU:) has been suggested to be
a reccurent nova in M31. Three outbursts in 1957, 1986 and 1998 are
recorded [did anyone monitor this star or observe this field in 1998?]
Their "recurrent nova" rather than a foreground SU UMa-type dwarf nova
came from the long duration of outbursts and slower decline rate at later
stages. They claims that PT And fits the relationship between the
magnitude at maximum and the decline rate (MMRD) for novae in M31.
But I wonder whether this MMRD applies to recurrent novae. Recent
calculations by Hachisu and Kato, on U Sco and other recurrent novae,
have shown they reach aboslute magnitudes substantially fainter than
the MMRD predicts. I would like to hear comments from recurrent nova
specialists.
