[vsnet-chat 2690] Re:[Vsnet-chat 2679] [Prediscovery obs. of cv]

It is certainly possible to find prediscovery observations of CVs in
the AC. I am not familiar enough with AC2000 to make a comment, but 25 years
ago I was using the Sydney Obs. zone of the Astrographic Catalogue (-51 to
-65deg S) to prepare a chart for
WX Hyi. I was amazed to find the variable recorded at approx. 11th mag.,
evidently
caught during a SUPERMAXIMUM. Normal maxima (3 or 4 times a month), while
being easy
catches for visual observers, would have been just below the limiting mag.
of the AC plates ( about 11.5p). Supermaxima, while brighter, are much rarer.
The Sydney AC plate is N1333, exposed 1925 Nov. 10. The printed AC
volume I
worked from contained only RECTANGULAR coordinates, and I had no easy way to
convert
any of them to RA and DEC. I think WX Hyi was first reported as a variable
in 1949,
courtesy of Herr Hoffmeister.

Regards,
/Mati
