[vsnet-chat 2607] Re: 'F Type' Carbon Stars

Thanks to JG for the interesting comparison of ye olde SAO against
the Stephenson carbon-star catalogue.
One can compare large lists fairly easily using VizieR, and the results
arrive in a matter of one or two minutes rather than hours. For instance
I have run my lists of positions from spectral surveys into VizieR (using
the 'search from list' option), looking at IRAS or some other, and the
report comes spewing back far faster than you can actually look at it. Not
long ago I asked for an all-sky list from Hipparcos that I knew would yield
about 9000 stars, and that took maybe 3 minutes.
To repeat something like John did, one could simply copy the whole
Stephenson catalogue locally, trim out everything except the positions, and
have VizeR look at that list against the SAO with some modest search radius.
There would be no need to precess the coords, since VizieR takes eq. 1900
as input and will return either 1950 or 2000.
