Hi everybody,
if thinking of plotting one's data using a
smoothing function, remember Rutherford's wisdom on the subject:
'Don't do statistics, do a better experiment.'
And with respect to binning pixels, it is worth taking note of the gain
setting one gets when binning pixels, as this may be less than the gain with
unbinned pixels. For instance the ST6 I use for aperture phot. gives 6.7
electrons per ADU, but 3.35 if using the 'low res' mode.
I support Arne's comment that it really is up to the worker to find what
works best, simple experiments will show one the optimal approach to their
photometry.
