[vsnet-chat 1291] Supernovae and an accelerating Universe

  Hello:

I have reading the september issue of Sky & Telescope and there is an
article about the relationship between type-Ia supernovae and the
Einstein's cosmological constant. The High-z Supernova Search Team and the
Supernova Cosmology Project have been observing very distant galaxies
looking for supernovae to calculate their expansion rate.

The results, published or being published in the Astronomical Journal, is
that the younger galaxies are, the lowest velocity was: currently the
Universe is accelerating its expansion. The original article is available
in http://xxx.lanl.gov/list/astro-ph/

I would like to hear some views of the members of VSNET about the
confidence of this research and its weight in the actual cosmology.

  Good nights... of good observing.
