Actually the GSC is off. The plotted position is shifted east a little from
the actual position. You have the REal Sky you can see this easily. There
is a bright star just east of the north end of the galaxy, but the supernova
is embedded in the southern end of the galaxy about at the end of the edge
on and southwest of the nucleus. So that "star" you saw is probably the
supernova. I have an image I took last night if you care to see just email
me and I will send it to you. There is also an image posted somewhere, but
I forgot the url.
