[vsnet-chat 1174] SN 1998dl in NGC 1084

Dear SN watchers,

Lick group has again discovered an nearby supernova, successively!
According to IAUC 6992, the new object, SN 1998dl, is located at R.A.
= 2h46m01s.47, Decl. = -7o34'25".1 (2000.0), which is about 22" east
and 12" north from the core of the Sc galaxy NGC 1084. Spectroscopic
observation has not been reported, so the type of SN has not been
determined.

The discovery was made on Aug. 20.5 UT image, but on the prediscovery
images Lick group confirmed the new star was there on Aug 2.5.
Reported magnitudes are:

1997 Dec. 26.2 >18.0:
1998 Aug. 2.5 16.0:
     Aug. 9.5 15.9:
     Aug. 20.5 16.0: (unfiltered CCD)

The light curve of typical SNeIa seems not to fit these magnitudes.

This galaxy has produced two other SNe; SN 1963P and SN 1996an. The
former was of type Ia, whose magnitude at maximum was B = 14.0 +- 0.2.
The latter was of type II, which maybe discovered after maximum. The
discovery magnitude of SN 1996an was about 14.0 mag.

If you have observed NGC 1068 this July or August, please check your
images whether SN 1998dl was there or not, and report it to vsnet or
such places. Followup observations are also encouraged.

Sincerely Yours,
