Thanks to everyone who posted replies about the position of RY Ser.
Everything is quite clear now!
It is curious, that the first edition (1993) of the Downes and Shara
CV atlas gives a reference to the 1991 Russian atlas of cataclysmic
variables by Khruzina and Shugarov, yet D&S considered that RY Ser
could not be identified using the Russian chart. I have had a look
at the Russian chart, and I find that it shows RY Ser correctly.
Apart from an incorrect scale bar, the main hindrance appears to be
messy artwork. Nine comparison stars are labelled, but the listed
photographic magnitudes seem to be badly out in many cases.
A chart for RY & RX Ser also appears in the variable star atlas by
Tsesevich and Kazanasmas (1971). This chart may be useful when the
variable is near maximum, but probably not useful at minimum.
