While Rod Stubbings' observations of RY Ser are pretty conclusive as to which star is the real variable, a further test would be to get a B & V pair of CCD images of the field. These variables are usually quite blue and are therefore easy to pick out if you have color information. You might be able to do the same from the USNO-A catalog since the POSS O and E plates of a given field were taken on the same night, and differentially within a field they should give you relative color of objects, though much cruder than the CCD technique. DS and DWS, while in general of high quality, do have a few identification errors. Just because the coordinates are quoted to the nearest tenth of an arcsec does not necessarily mean they have identified the right star. Arne
