G'day all,
Thanks for the numerous emails about LaTEX. It seems I'm one of the few
people in VSNET who hasn't heard of it! For the benefit of the other
ignorant readers (all 5 of you ;-) here's my understanding of LaTEX:
"A hardware-independent, noncommercial, page description language;
designed to be extendable." A similar concept to Postscript or Adobe's
PDF, but without the licensing fees.
Unfortunately that was about as far as I got with LaTEX, even after visiting
sites devoted to the subject. IMO all written for cognoscenti not beginners.
I did find a couple of LaTEX FAQ's. Possibly the most baffling non-government
documents I have ever seen, and not at all helpful. Do I really need to
download 100+ MB of mysteriously-named files? Which one do I run? Which
one is the _instructions_?
After getting quite bewildered by LaTEX; I read a few more emails and
discovered that IBVS don't accept papers based on visual observations
anyway. This wasn't mentioned in their "guide to authors"! Presumably
the editors have good reason for this policy but I am disappointed.
However, Frank Bateson has offered to publish my EsB 365 article in the
Publications of the VSS RASNZ.
cheers,
Fraser Farrell
