[vsnet-chat 801] Re: vsnet mail

Hi,

I tend to agree with Lasse on both points. However it boils down to which outbursts or events are the more important ones . How is Taichi-san to evaluate all of them. There are obvious choices sometimes, as in the case of novae, supernovae and arguably some DNe like now TU Crt and possibly some Northern targets I don't know that well, or V893 Sco as it may represent the 'lost one'. As most readers are Northern I don't even mind a slight bias towards their targets...

Re: USNO sequences. Firstly I wonder how accurate are these values. On the other hand they might be the only ones you 'll ever get.The chart info itself can be modified to only include stars within your wanted magnitude range. This means deleting up to 95% of the data, which may take 'in 'Notepad' up to 10 minutes deleting... If you don't do that the VS charts will be unreadable!

Just my opinion..

Dear Colleagues,

A few topics for discussion.

I think that the amount of vsnet_obs messages containing updates and
summaries on individual
stars have increased a lot lately. Do we really need all these messages
?
I think that one summary after the outburst of a star would do it.
Exceptions could be rare outbursts, "hot" topics like EG Cnc last year
or unusual events like MV Lyr suddenly rising.
But I think 3-4 update/summary messages on an ordinary CN Ori or HL CMa
outburst are too much.
Do you have an opinion on this subject ?

VSNET charts. I like the vsnet charts. I use these charts a lot.
But lately many of the charts have been based on USNO data.
This means that you get a lot of very faint stars (mag.18 - 20) on the
charts.
The charts become very crowded and I think that in most cases these
faint stars
are not needed to identify and estimate the variable.
Maybe faint comparison stars are needed very near the variable, but not
far from the variable.
I must admit that I liked the old vsnet charts better. Then the mag
limit was about 17.5.
Do you have an opinion on this subject ?
