It is indeed the case that the mag. 18-19 star first thought to be the
progenitor of the nova is not the correct star. This is clear from the
positions during outburst by the Carlsberg Meridian Circle and of the
nebular radio source as observed by the MERLIN interferometer. (Both of
these facilities, by the way, are to be shut down with the closing of the
Royal Greenwich Observatory.) Anyway, I examined the POSS-II J films of
the region more recently, and found that a mag. ~21 star matching the
Carlsberg/MERLIN position within a couple tenths of an arcsecond is visible
about 2 arcsec north of the original (brighter) candidate. This fainter
star is not discernable on the older POSS-I prints since they are of lower
resolution and do not reach so faint.
As the nova fades, I would presume the mag. 18-19 field star will begin
to interfere more strongly with observations.
