The outburst amplitude of CY UMa is slightly larger than 5 mag, probably
marginally below the borderline of the TOAD classification.
Judging from available observations (VSNET since 1994, VSOLJ since 1987),
there have been no rebrightenings in this system, though the VSOLJ observations
may not have gone deep enough.
CY UMa seems to me a more usual SU UMa-type dwarf nova in its superhump
period and outburst frequency.
Returning back to the issue of variable nomenclature, the discovery report
of CY UMa was published in Astron. Tsirk. (in Russian), and the announcement
of the official nomenclature in the Name List later - no type information
at that tiome. It therefore took a considerable time before we noticed such
a bright (and seemingly interesting) dwarf nova was discovered. The same
was probably true for the AAVSO. At my first sight of the Astron. Tsirk.
article (without knowing the Name List), I thought it was one of famous
Russian discoveries of Ursa Major dwarf novae, BZ UMa, CH UMa etc., and
overlooked it for a long time.
