From my experience, Purkinje's effect is most clearly felt when estimating
novae during the nebular stage. During this stage novae show strong emission
lines of [OIII], to which nocturnal vision is far more sensitive. Against
bright sky background of Japan, novae in this stage look much brighter in
high-magnification field -- sometimes amounting to 1 mag. Similar effect
has been reported in the case of RS Oph, though I'm not sure whether this
is also attributable to Purkinje's effect.
