Date: Sat, 18 Oct 2003 14:51:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Ron Remillard <rr@space.mit.edu> To: vsnet-alert@kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp Subject: New Outburst in Recurrent X-ray transient (MX0656-072 = XTEJ0658-073) The soft X-ray transient, "MX0656-072", has begun a new X-ray outburst. Observations with the RXTE All-Sky Monitor reveal a slowly increasing flux during the last 7 days, reaching a value of 75 (5) mCrab at 2-12 keV on 2003 October 18. The ASM position is consistent with the 3' error box (J2000 center in degrees: 104.612, -7.263) produced by Ariel V during the 1975-1976 outburst. The current X-ray flux is similar to the peak value (80 mCrab) seen in sparse measurements of the first outburst (see Liu et al. 2001, A&A 368, 1021). Observations at optical and other wavelengths are strongly encouraged. Ron Remillard (MIT) and Frank Marshall (GSFC) report for the RXTE ASM team. _____
