Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2003 16:19:07 -0400 From: "Howard E. Bond" <bond@stsci.edu> Subject: Re: New Object in HX Peg field The field of the suspected transient near HX Peg was imaged with the SMARTS 1.3m telescope at Cerro Tololo by Juan Espinoza as follows: 2003 Sep 21 02:14 UT = Sep 21.093 Sep 21 04:39 UT = Sep 21.194 Sep 21 06:42 UT = Sep 21.279 At each epoch, exposures of 3x300 sec were obtained in both V and I. Observing conditions were non-photometric. None of the frames show any object near the proposed position of Linnolt's optical transient [vsnet-alert 7862] located south of star 155, down to a limit of V ~ 21 on our best frames. We confirm Henden's finding [vsnet-alert 7892] that star 155 itself is variable, having faded by ~0.1 mag over the interval indicated above. Pending evidence to the contrary, it appears that star 155 itself may be the reported variable object. We thank Rebeccah Winnick and the SMARTS team for scheduling these observations at very short notice. Howard E. Bond Space Telescope Science Institute Juan Espinoza SMARTS Consortium
