[vsnet-alert 7494] SN 2002fk in NGC 1309

Dear SN watchers,
A bright and rising SN was discovered by Beijing team and R. Kushida
independently. If it is of type Ia, it can become mag 14.1.
According to IAUC 7973, SN 2002fk was discovered on Sept. 15.84 (mag
about 15.7) and confirmed on Sept 17.79 (mag about 14.5) by Beijing
team, and independently discovered by R. Kushida on Sept 17.719 (mag
15.0). The position of SN is: R.A. = 3h22m05s.71, Decl. =
-15o24'03".2 (2000.0), which is about 12" west and 3" south of the
center of NGC 1309. NGC 1309 is a face-on spiral (SA(r)bc:) galaxy.
The reported magnitudes suggest that it is in a rising phase.
Typical SN Ia at maximum would be mag about 14.1 for this galaxy.
Follow-up photometry and spectroscopic classification is urged.
