Dear SN watchers,
IAUC 7241 reported the supernova discovery by Beijing team. The new
star, named as SN 1999dn, is located at R.A. = 23h36m14s.70, Decl. =
+2o09'08".8 (2000.0), which is about 10" east and 9" south of the
center og NGC 7714. The magnitude on discovery (Aug. 19.76) was
reported as about 16.0.
NGC 7714 is SBb galaxy, but quite disrupted probably because of the
interaction with 2' east galaxy NGC 7715. These two make a pair named
as Arp 284. NGC 7714 should be seen as a bright bar (NW to SE)
surrounded by northeastern arc and southwestern arm. The location of
SN is near to the southeast end of the bright bar. There is somewhat
bright (about mag 18) point-like object on the southwestern arm,
possibly an H II region of this galaxy, which is about 10" west and
16" south from the center of NGC 7714.
As IAUC noted, there is a bright (about 14 mag) foreground star,
which is named as USNO0900-20600126. It locates about 37" west and
40" south of the center of the host.
Estimated from the recession velocity of the host galaxy, typical
SNeIa without absorption will reach about 14.5 mag or so at their
maximum. Followup magnitude estimates is quite urged, as well as
spectroscopic followup.
Sincerely Yours,
Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan
