The X-ray Nova / black-hole binary J1655-40 is in outburst again!
(J2000 RA=16h 54m 00s Dec=-39 50 45.6)
The source is being observed by XTE -- X-ray brightness is 3 Crabs!!!
Please observe with CCD photometers and 1m time resolution
to cover 2.6d binary period. The orbital lightcurve will
be changing due to X-ray heating, and eclipses may be
observed if the accretion disk radius increases during the
outburst. The ephemeris for minimum light is
HJD=2449885.592(21) + 2.6212(16)E
(van der Hooft etal 1996 preprint for MNRAS).
Please observe simultaneously with XTE using high-speed photometers
on 1m or larger telescopes. Use time resolution at least 1s, but 0.1s or
0.01s or faster if possible. Absolute timing accuracy of at least 0.1s,
but 1ms or better if possible. Source may be at V=13, but use
white light for maximum count rate, or an R filter may preferred because
source probably suffers high reddening E(B-V)=1.0.
If simultaneous optical and X-ray lightcurves are obtained, we can use
them to look for time delays due to light travel time from X-ray source near
black hole to optical light sources being driven by X-ray heating on the
accretion disk around the black hole and on the companion star.
From time delays measured at different binary phases we can determine
the size and inclination of the orbit to constrain the black hole
mass, radius of accretion disk, size of companion star, and other details
of the structure of the accretion flow.
Scheduled XTE observing times are as follows:
