Nova Colleagues,
On March 4th UT, Ray Bertram obtained a spectrum of N Sgr 1994 for me
at the Perkins 1.8-m telescope. The spectrum covers the 4500-5700 Ang
region at a resolution of about 5 Ang. The spectrum is most unusual
for a nova at this stage of the outburst. The continuum is very red,
in agreement with the broad-band colors, exhibits a very narrow H-beta
emission line, and contains a forest of absorption lines. There is a
broad absorption feature at 5000 Ang.
Is it possible that this object is not a nova but a long period variable?
The spectral interval we covered is not well suited for classification
of this object and was constrained by the AGN Watch program running
at the same time. Additional spectra of N Sgr 1994 are urgently requested
for confirmation, especially in the red and H-alpha region. Our next
chance will be March 9 UT.
cheers, Mark Wagner
