Dear Dr. Kato,
please forward this message to Kunjaya:

AY Lyr
------

Dear Kunjaya,

Yes, I agree. The value given by Hassall very likely refers to the
superhump period, and not to the orbital period, although this
is not clear from the text. According to the table, the period value
was obtained during an ordinary outburst, and not during a supermax,
but that is probably wrong. It seems that literature does not contain
any explicit statements concerning the orbital period of AY Lyr, so
I suppose it has never been exactly determined.

An intersting question is whether or not superhump periods are
constant for a particular SU UMa star; I assume they are NOT, since
nothing remains constant (at least in the world of variables!)
when closely looked upon. Future observations will show; in any
case, the study of superhumps will certainly bring us important keys
to our understanding of dwarf novae and other close binaries.

Regards,
Hans
