Novae:
use the GCVS name if it becomes available. Othersise use
3-letter constellation code (in upper case letters)
+ "nova" + year tentative format as announced in vsnet-alert
or in other medium. When there are multiple novae in the same
constellation and in the same year, add a hyphen after the year
and the number in the year (usually announced in vsnet-alert).
For extragalactic novae, use the galaxy name (LMC, SMC, M31 etc.)
instead of the constellation code.
Examples:
CENnova2001 for
Nova Cen 2001 (now known as
V1039 Cen)
SGRnova2002-3 for
Nova Sgr 2002 No. 3 (now known as
V4743 Sgr)
SMCnova2002 for the first
Nova in SMC in 2002
NSV stars: add leading zeros when the number is less than 10000.
No space between NSV and the number.
When the Greek-letter name is available, preferably use the Greek names (e.g. ORIdelta, ARIalpha etc.).
Hipparcos stars: add leading zeros when the number is less than 100000.
No space between HIP and the number.
Examples:
HIP033789
When GCVS, NSV, or Greek-letter name available, the usage of Hipparcos name should be avoided.
Durchmusterung stars: no leading zeros in any part.
Catalog code:
BD : Bonner Durchmusterung
CD : Cordova Durchmusterung (not CoD in this system)
CPD : Cape Photographic Survey
No space between catalog code, degree, and the number.
Examples:
BD-8.1642
CD-32.123
CPD-58.4492
When GCVS, NSV, or Greek-letter name available, the usage of Durchmusterung name should be avoided.
GSC stars: no leading zeros in both area code and object
number for GSC 1.0-1.2.
Catalog code:
GSC : GSC 1.0, 1.1, 1.2
Use an explicit catalog version when the version is equal
to 2 or higher. No space between catalog code and area number.
The separator is "." between the area and object number
for GSC 1.0-1.2.
Examples:
GSC2672.1449
GSC7392.254
When GCVS, NSV, Greek-letter name, or a Durchmusterung name is available, the usage of GSC name should be avoided. When
Supernovae:
always use "SN" prefix. No space between SN and year.
Use upper and lower case letters properly. Preserve the "SN"
expression even if the object turns out to be a non-supernova
object (e.g. SN1998di,
now received the formal designation
of KL Dra).
Examples:
SN1987A
SN2002ap (not SN2002AP)
Do not use constellation codes in describing the objects having
full catalog names.
Examples:
3C273 (not VIR3C273)
OJ287 (not CNCOJ287)
MisV1147 (not CEPMisV1147, nor MISV1147)
HadV04 (not SERHadV04 nor HADV04, now known as
QZ Ser)
